BIOGRAPHY

Roz Fearnehough is a multi-instrumental, cross-genre trombonist studying at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.

Her influences are varied and vibrant, ranging from Sons of Kemet to Saint-Saens, Kate Bush to Sid Vicious. They create a patchwork quilt of musical ideas which she draws from to inspire her trombone, piano and bass guitar playing. Roz’s style is flexible and adaptable, ranging from powerful and exciting to soft and lyrical.

Born in Wolverhampton, the trombone was not Roz’s first choice of instrument. Her original goal was to be a drummer, but something about the trombone caught her eye. Luckily, she showed a natural talent and flair for the instrument and reached her Grade 8 in just four years. Excited for the social opportunities that she had lacked while playing piano, Roz joined a multitude of groups, programs and orchestras within the West Midlands and beyond, including;

St Peter’s Collegiate Church Choir

Midlands Youth Jazz Orchestra

CBSO Project Remix

Wolverhampton Youth, Wind, and Symphony Orchestras

The Black Country Big Band

NYO Inspire

Ronnie Scott’s Big Band in a Day

Roz is passionate about music being accessible to all. She comes from a not-so-affluent part of Wolverhampton, and studied at state schools. She has the Wolverhampton Music School to thank for her opportunity to learn the trombone, due to heavily subsidised lessons and access to orchestras, free of charge. In the future, she hopes to be an advocate for more accessible ways for children from all walks of life to learn and enjoy music, especially the classical aspect.

Roz doesn't restrict herself to classical music. She is excited and eager to discover new music and involve her trombone playing with it. Inspired by the thriving jazz scene in London, she has recently started a post-punk jazz group who are based at the infamous Brunswick Mill studios in Manchester.
